Age-Restricted Services

Privacy-preserving age checks without retaining unnecessary identity data.

The challenge

Age-restricted services increasingly have to demonstrate that they check a customer's age, without turning every interaction into a full identity collection exercise that creates its own privacy exposure and retention burden. Collecting and storing a full identity document for every customer, purely to confirm they are old enough to buy a product, holds more data than the check actually requires.

At the same time, an age check that can be defeated with a photo, a borrowed ID or a static image undermines the purpose of having the control at all. Services need a check that is quick enough for routine transactions, resistant to simple spoofing, and structured so that only the minimum data needed to evidence the decision is retained.

Key use cases

Anonymous age estimation

A short live face scan is used to estimate the customer's age without capturing or retaining an identity document, allowing the service to make a pass or escalate decision without collecting more personal data than the check requires.

Liveness check against spoofing

The age-estimation scan includes a liveness check, so a printed photo or replayed video presented to the camera cannot be used to pass the check on someone else's behalf.

Escalation to document verification

Where an age estimate falls close to the restricted threshold, the flow escalates to a full document verification step instead of relying on the estimate alone, reserving fuller identity checks for genuinely borderline cases.

Data-minimising evidence trail

Retention is limited to evidence of the check outcome rather than the underlying identity data, so the service can demonstrate it applied an age check without holding a full identity record on every customer.

Core capabilities

Anonymous age estimation

Estimates age from a live face scan without requiring document capture for every customer.

3D liveness detection

Prevents a photo or replayed video being used in place of the customer's live face.

Document verification escalation

Provides a fuller identity and document check for borderline age-estimation results.

Cross-platform capture

Runs on standard web and mobile cameras at the point of purchase or account setup.

How it works in practice

Gateway to an age-restricted purchase

At checkout, a customer buying an age-restricted product completes a short face scan for age estimation instead of uploading an identity document. The system checks liveness and produces an age estimate; clear-cut results allow the purchase to proceed without any document ever being collected. A result close to the restricted age threshold escalates to a document verification step, so the fuller check is only used where the estimate alone is not sufficient. Retention rules, agreed in advance, keep a record of the decision that was made rather than storing the identity data used to reach it.

Expected outcomes

  • Age checks completed without collecting a full identity document for every customer
  • A liveness check that resists simple photo or video spoofing
  • Fuller document checks reserved for genuinely borderline age estimates
  • A retained record of the check outcome without unnecessary identity data retention

How CyberLane helps

CyberLane advises age-restricted service providers on designing an age-check flow that satisfies regulatory expectations without over-collecting identity data, including where anonymous age estimation is sufficient and where escalation to document verification is warranted. We help set retention rules for evidencing decisions, define the business case against current age-verification costs, and plan a proof of concept covering both clear-cut and borderline cases, coordinating delivery with FaceTec or a qualified implementation partner.

  • Age-check workflow design covering estimation, escalation and fallback paths
  • Data-retention policy for evidencing age-check decisions
  • Business case for anonymous age estimation against current verification costs
  • Proof-of-concept plan covering clear-cut and borderline age scenarios

CyberLane is independent and works on the decision rather than the deployment. Product-specific delivery is coordinated with the vendor or a qualified implementation partner.
