The challenge
Age-restricted services increasingly have to demonstrate that they check a customer's age, without turning every interaction into a full identity collection exercise that creates its own privacy exposure and retention burden. Collecting and storing a full identity document for every customer, purely to confirm they are old enough to buy a product, holds more data than the check actually requires.
At the same time, an age check that can be defeated with a photo, a borrowed ID or a static image undermines the purpose of having the control at all.
