Mobility & Authorized Driver Verification

FaceTec's face authentication has been deployed by carsharing and vehicle-access providers to confirm that only authorised drivers can unlock and operate a vehicle.

The challenge

Shared-vehicle and fleet operators need a fast, reliable way to confirm that the person requesting access to a vehicle through a mobile app is the authorised account holder, rather than someone using a shared or stolen login. This check needs to work reliably across a wide range of consumer devices and in everyday outdoor conditions, without adding noticeable friction to the unlock experience.

FaceTec's technology has been used in this context to replace or supplement PIN- and password-based access with a face-based check performed directly on the user's own device before a vehicle is unlocked.

Practical applications

Authorised driver verification at vehicle unlock

Confirms the person requesting to unlock a shared vehicle matches the enrolled account holder's FaceMap before access is granted, reducing the risk of unauthorised use of a shared account or device.

Universal mobile device support

Runs across a broad range of consumer smart devices, allowing carsharing and fleet operators to support authentication without requiring dedicated hardware at the vehicle itself.

Fast, low-friction unlock experience

Performs the liveness and match check quickly enough to fit within a typical vehicle-unlock flow, keeping the authentication step from becoming a barrier to everyday use.

Core capabilities

Mobile-device face authentication

Verifies drivers directly through their own smartphone or tablet.

Fast liveness and match processing

Completes the check quickly enough for a vehicle-unlock use case.

IT-friendly deployment

Integrates into existing mobile apps without requiring new vehicle-side hardware.

How it works in practice

Unlocking a shared vehicle through a mobile app

A carsharing customer opens the operator's app to unlock a nearby vehicle. Before the door unlocks, the app prompts a quick 3D FaceScan, which is matched against the FaceMap captured when the customer registered for the service. Once the match is confirmed, the vehicle unlocks, giving the operator confidence that the person taking the car is the authorised account holder rather than someone else using a shared login, without adding a noticeable delay to the unlock process.

  1. 1Customer requests to unlock a vehicle through the mobile app
  2. 2App captures a 3D FaceScan and matches it to the enrolled account
  3. 3Vehicle unlocks once the authorised driver is confirmed

Expected outcomes

  • Reduced unauthorised use of shared vehicle accounts
  • A fast authentication step that fits within an everyday unlock flow
  • No dependency on additional vehicle-side authentication hardware

How CyberLane helps

CyberLane helps mobility and fleet operators assess where face-based driver verification fits within their existing app and vehicle-access architecture, and how to balance authentication speed against assurance level for everyday use.

  • Mobile app authentication flow assessment
  • Vendor and technology comparison for driver verification
  • Unlock-flow user experience review
  • Deployment and rollout planning

CyberLane is independent and works on the decision rather than the deployment. Product-specific delivery is coordinated with the vendor or a qualified implementation partner.
